Top 5 Mistakes to avoid on the First Day of Your Job

First day of our job, whether the first job or the successive ones shall be dealt with very cautiously as your first impression will be made on this day. If you get a good start, your career graph will show good results and if (God Forbids) you mess up on the first day, it becomes difficult to survive. Because of its importance, the first day can be called as the deciding day of your career with the organization. Here are some mistakes to avoid on the first day of your job:

1.      Reaching late
This is the worst mistake anyone can do on the very first day at job. Try to reach at least 10-15 minutes before time on the first day by starting early from home and keeping time for unexpected time wastage.

2.      Not Writing Things on your Notepad during Meetings
Generally the employee is given a new notepad on the joining day by almost every company in the welcome kit. The company expects you to start using the same immediately by write important points on it during meetings. If you save papers on your notepad, you are not doing any good to yourself.

3.      Mentioning that you know too many times
On the first day, you will be told several things about the company, its culture, its values, facilities available, timings, etc. You might feel that you are being told the obvious but, it is important to know that you must not say “I know” too many times that it hurts the person sharing information with you.

4.      Becoming too frank with colleagues
It is good to develop good friendly relation with colleague’s right from the beginning but it is always better to cautiously disclose things about yourself to them, as you never know who the bosses’ favorite is and secretly passes messages to him.

5.      Being non appreciative
Appropriate appreciation is always good as it puts the other person at ease in your company. However, too much or too less of it can play havoc.

As they say “First impression is the last impression” and being your first day you will be closely watched, it is always good to be prepared and avoid wrong things that can be easily avoided.
